Employment Specialist

Burnaby Association for Community Inclusion is seeking an Employment Specialist to support people with developmental disabilities to obtain employment. This is a Full-Time 37.5 hours per week, unionized position with benefits upon completion of probation. 

An Employment Specialist facilitates pre-employment instruction and workshops in a number of different areas. Assists with creating opportunities for work experience/learning opportunities to inform the Discovery Process.

Through the Process of Discovery, an Employment Specialist plans meetings and assessments of the need and type of service required. Investigates the strengths, preferences and ideal conditions for employment, as well as potential barriers. Works collaboratively with the individual, the family, the business and professional consultants.

Through Job coaching an employment specialist conducts a task analysis of job duties. Uses a variety of instructional approaches to support coaching an individual to perform the identified job duties. Keeps data to inform instructional approaches. Consults with co- workers and families to support the work performance of the individual, and revises approaches when necessary. Monitors and oversees training plans and conducts on-going follow-up to ensure successful employment outcomes. Helps the individual to understand the workplace culture. Provides referrals to additional supports as required.

Through Job Development, an employment specialist works with the business community to assist with building disability confidence and assists to identify/address needs for modification or accomodation. Proactively outreaches to existing and new employers to source out competitive job opportunities, identify potential job carving, create job trials and placements, and support job training. Analyzes jobs and completes task analysis. Negotiates employment proposals, contracts and facilitates training plans. Plans, prepares and monitors supports, prompts, and routines. Provides job instruction on routines and liaises with co-workers to develop natural supports.

Throgh Organization an employment specialist manages a portfolio of job seekers through varying stages of job development. Develops and maintains accurate reports and documentation on the individual and their participation, and submits reports as required. Ensures that all documentation is complete. Develops and maintains employer database to match individuals with employers and maintains records of community resources to meet the individual's needs. Attends staff meetings, personal planning meetings, staff development and inservice training. Maintains confidentiality of individuals, their families and Association records and reports. This position requires a Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Social Services, Career/Employment Counseling, Sales/Marketing, Business.   3-5 years experience working in the employment field, augmented with formal training in the areas of supported and customized employment.  Further training in behavioral and communication support, and person-centered planning preferred. Valid CPR, First Aid, NVCI certification.  Valid class 5 BC Driver’s license and vehicle that can be used for work are required.
